October 28: By request, for the WMSE membership drive this week, Alternating Currents surveys the music of Thelonius Monk.

October 21: The music of Robert Ashley who will be in Milwaukee on Friday, November 16, peforming in Woodland Pattern Book Center’s 32nd Anniversary Gala. Our broadcast will include his complete opera Now Eleanor’s Idea.

October 15: The cello/double bass duo of Diedre Murray and Fred Hopkins (Firestorm on Victo) along with music by Mauricio Kagel and double bassist Barre Phillips.

October 7: On October 2, 1992 Alternating Currents debuted with Space Flight, a dynamic little string quartet miniature by Ornette Coleman. We open our 20th anniversary program with Space Flight and feature Ornette Coleman’s intriging work with strings, woodwinds, and brass throughout the show and, in celebration, conclude the program with his grand symphony The Skies of America.

Alternating Currents on WMSE (91.7FM) in Milwaukee every Sunday night from 6 until 9 p.m. is a showcase for music that experiments both with form and sound, in other words, serious creative work from artists who challenge the concepts and shapes of modern music-making. Alternating Currents is about the adventure of sound as it surveys music of 20th and 21st centuries including modern classical music, contemporary open form free jazz, electroacoustic and electronic music, and freely improvised music.
