January 29: Solos from the 70s … featuring selections from solo LPs by Oliver Lake, David Murray, Hamiett Bluiett, Don Pullen, Amina Claudine Myers, Billy Bang, Leroy Jenkins, Albert Mangelsdorf, Steve Lacy, Joe McPhee, and many others (including long out-of-print recordings on HORO Records, Passin’ Thru, Sweet Earth Records, Hat Hut, and other significant record labels from the period).

January 22: John Cage’s Concert for Piano and Orchestra in several unique performances by David Tudor, Francis-Marie Uitti, the Barton Workshop, the S.E.M. Ensemble, and the Nextime Ensemble with Stefano Scodanibbio). This is the first of several programs this year celebrating the 100th birthday of John Cage.

January 15: The music of composer/multi-instrumentalist Julius Hemphill.

January 8: Some discoveries from 2011 (old and new music) along with Part 2 of our tribute to Sam Rivers (at 8pm).

January 1: At 6pm, the music of Bill Dixon. At 7pm, Les Diaboliques with Maggie Nichols, Irene Schwiezer, and Joelle Leandre. At 8pm, a tribute to Sam Rivers.

Alternating Currents on WMSE (91.7FM) in Milwaukee every Sunday night from 6 until 9 p.m. is a showcase for music that experiments both with form and sound, in other words, serious creative work from artists who challenge the concepts and shapes of modern music-making. Alternating Currents is about the adventure of sound as it surveys music of 20th and 21st centuries including modern classical music, contemporary open form free jazz, electroacoustic and electronic music, and freely improvised music.
